The magic of starting small and thinking big is the philosophy used by Haji Mohamed Mustafa , the founder of Mustafa Center
Mustafa Centre is a massive 24-hour shopping mall located at 145 Syed Alwi Road in Singapore's Little India district. It is famous for offering over 300,000 budget-friendly items, including electronics, groceries, apparel, and gold jewelry.
Mustafa and his son(Mustaq Ahmad) started trading immediately after they arrived in Singapore from India in 1951, operating a food stall selling tea and bread.
The first shop was established in 1971, and it has expanded into other regions in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Start small but look at bigger pictures Mustafa Shopping Centre in Singapore is a clear example of how starting small and thinking big can create a lasting, high-impact retail destination. The business began as a modest retail operation and expanded through consistent reinvestment in inventory, store layout, and customer convenience, allowing it to scale without losing focus on value and variety. Over time, the centre grew into a multi-level, high-traffic shopping hub known for broad product coverage—ranging from everyday essentials to specialty goods—supported by efficient merchandising and a strong supply chain that can replenish fast-moving items. Its scale also reflects disciplined growth: expanding floor space and tenant offerings only as demand proved sustainable, while maintaining operational reliability in a dense urban market. Today, Mustafa’s prominence in Singapore demonstrates that large outcomes can come from incremental improvements—better selection, improved accessibility, and stronger operational execution—combined with a long-term vision to serve a wide customer base.
